Create an essay rubric for a personal narrative assignment that values vulnerability and authentic voice alongside technical writing standards.
Context: What Does the AI Need to Know?
The AI can't read your mind. It doesn't know your classroom layout, your students' prior knowledge, your school's culture, or your teaching philosophy. So you have to tell it.

Questions to ask yourself: What specifically am I asking for? How will I use this output? What constraints exist? What should not be included? How will I know if it's good?
Output Format: How Do You Want It Structured?
Tell the AI exactly how you want the information presented. This saves you formatting time and ensures you get something usable immediately.
Instead of: Create a rubric.
Try: Create a rubric in a table format with 4 columns: Exceeds Expectations, Meets Expectations, Approaching Expectations, Below Expectations. And 4 rows: Content Knowledge, Organization, Evidence of Learning, Reflection. Each cell should have 2-3 sentences explaining what student work looks like at that level. Use accessible language that a 9th grader could understand.
Format specifications matter because they ensure the output is actually usable in your classroom, save you time reformatting, and give the AI clear parameters to work within.
Quality Guardrails: What Should the AI Avoid?
Tell the AI what not to do. This prevents common pitfalls and keeps the output aligned with your values.
Instead of: Create a lesson on healthy eating.
Try: Create a lesson on healthy eating that avoids diet culture language, doesn't shame any body types, doesn't assume access to expensive foods, addresses food insecurity, and celebrates cultural food traditions. Avoid suggesting calorie counting or weight as a measure of health.
Quality guardrails protect against biases embedded in the AI's training, assumptions that don't match your context, language or approaches that contradict your teaching values, and content that could marginalize students.
The Framework in Action: A Complete Example
Here is how all five elements work together:
Role: You are an experienced middle school language arts teacher who has taught for 8 years and specializes in helping struggling readers build confidence through choice and relevance.
Context: I teach 6th grade in a diverse, under-resourced urban school. My students read 2-3 years below grade level on average. They're more engaged with video content than text. I have one class period of 45 minutes and they have minimal time for homework.
Task: Create a reading assignment that will appeal to my students and actually get them reading, even though they often avoid reading. I want something I can assign today that they can start during class.
